German Cabbage Skillet

This is my all time favorite and most used "go to" recipe. We eat this dish all the time. Not only because it is so completely simple to make, and not only because it only has a couple of ingredients, and not only because it is super affordable, and not only because it is really fast to get on the table....BUT...because it tastes so yummy. Who knew that by combining only a couple of ingredients you could have a one skillet wonder. And when I say a couple of ingredients, I mean... A COUPLE!
I like to say that it takes me back to my German roots, but to be honest I don't know if any of my ancestors are from Germany.
So if you are on a budget and short on time, I highly suggest you give this simple dish a try!

1 head green cabbage, sliced into ribbons
1 package Cheddar filled Bratwursts**See notes below
1 cup water
salt and pepper to taste

1. In a skillet on medium high heat brown your bratwursts, it doesn't matter if you cook them all the way through, right now you are just looking to get some nice char marks on the outside.
2. Remove brats from skillet and set aside.
3. To the hot pan, add the water. This will steam up a bit and sizzle so watch your hand. The water helps to get the flavorings left behind from the brats and uses it to flavor the cabbage.
4. Add cabbage to pan and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
5. Put the lid on and let the cabbage cook, turning every now and then to get all the pieces cooked, or in my case a little under cooked (I like a little tiny crunch in mine)
6. While cabbage is cooking slice up your brats.
7. When you think the cabbage is close to being done, add the brats back into the pan to finish cooking. Between the hot cabbage and the steam they will cook pretty fast while giving off extra juices into the cabbage.

And that's it. Easy right?!

**Randi's Side Notes**
~ Anti-Inflammatory Diet friends, this is a great meal for you. You can use any kind of turkey or chicken sausages you like, that are diet friendly of course. I ate this many times while doing the diet. I liked mine served up with a pile of baked sweet potato chips!
~ As for the bratwursts, I have made this with so many different kinds of brats and haven't found one yet that I don't like. I usually stick to the cheddarwursts, but in last nights case I used a chicken sausage stuffed with apple and Gouda cheese and it was fantastic! Play around and see what flavors you like best! If you find one that is out of this world, send me a comment and tell me which kind you tried and liked! I would love to hear what people like the best!
